Cardamom and The International Spice Trade

Cardamom is one of the most expensive of all the spices. It’s also become one of the most popular around the world. This beautifully aromatic spice is used in many cuisines for the spectacular flavour it adds to food and drinks. You don’t get a lot of cardamom for your dollar. It’s expensive as spices go. And, there are good reasons to buy Certified Organic spices over 'conventionally' grown spices as you will see.

‘Conventional’ spice crops are grown with pesticides, and all manner of other unthinkable additives. And then there are Certified Organic spices, grown in uncontaminated soil, with clean water, which are non-GMO, and all parts of their processing meet very stringent regulations.  You might not have given much thought to your spice supply, but even the little things in your pantry are important when it comes to food safety.

India is one of the world’s largest producers of cardamom, both conventional and organic, and sales have been sky rocketing. In the financial year ending in July 2018, India produced 5,680 tonnes of cardamom pods for export! One of India's biggest markets is the Middle Eastern State of Saudi Arabia where cardamom is used in the famous Arabic coffee, and in many of their classic dishes.

Cardamom Growers in a Spin!

Now, just when all is going swimmingly for India’s cardamom exports, the Saudis have imposed new food safety standards which require mandatory pesticide testing of all food going into their country. Understandably, this has thrown the conventional crop growers into a spin. Their valuable crops are no longer meeting the standards required by one of their biggest customers.

Now, you’ll be wondering what India is going to do with all their excess pesticide- contaminated cardamom, at least in the short term. Eventually those growers will have to comply with international demand for pesticide-free crops, but that will take years. In the meantime, the Saudi buyers will create more demand for Certified Organic cardamom. So, here in Australia we will see the price of conventional cardamom plummet and the price of Certified Organic cardamom hit the roof!

Buy Certified Organic Spices

So, when you see cheap cardamom for sale, don’t be corrupted! Stay firm in your belief that Certified Organic food is worth the extra you pay. This is exactly what the organic movement has always wanted…markets to force producers to grow safe, chemical-free food. We’re winning! We can see everywhere that organic foods are becoming mainstream. It’s happening all over the world, and Saudi Arabia and cardamom crops are just one small example.
