How Many Calories Should I Take to Lose 1 Pound? – Everyone’s daily maximum calorie intake is different. For this reason, everyone should arrange their meals according to their own daily calorie amount. In order to lose weight correctly, everyone needs to know how many calories they can consume per day.
- Word-of-mouth information will not give correct results for everyone, and may even lead you to wrong conclusions.
- In order to control your weight, you must know the answer to the question of how many calories are equal to 1 kilogram.1 kilo is equivalent to an average of 7400 calories.
- Your metabolic rate determines your maximum daily calorie intake and this amount should be in parallel with your metabolic rate.
Apart from metabolic rate, details such as age, gender, height and weight are among the details that affect your daily calorie intake. Starting to lose weight starts with reducing the amount of calories you take daily without exaggerating too much. At the point of reducing the daily calorie intake, the calorie calculation must be done correctly.
- For example, if the amount of calories you burn daily is 2000 calories, you can go down to between 10% and 30% of this amount.
- More than that can prevent you from losing a healthy weight, as well as slowing your metabolism.
- Losing weight does not mean starving.
- When your metabolic rate slows, your weight loss slows down.
You should also remember that losing weight is not a short-term process. Even if you can manage to lose weight in the short term, keep in mind that this is not a healthy weight loss situation. The important thing is not to lose weight fast, but to lose weight by giving yourself the right time.

The “real” facts about burning body fat Exercise Science The “real” facts about burning body fat In this age of information and so-called Insta Fitness “Experts” there is so much B.S. around when it comes to burning body fat. While methods and ideas change all the time we thought we’d take the moral high-ground and give you the facts.
Please understand, this info is not the latest “get skinny fast” gimmick, just the facts that haven’t changed in decades. So, let’s give you some REAL facts about fat burning to help you on your journey. There are 7,700kcals (kcal=calorie) worth of energy in 1kg of fat. That means in order to burn 1kg of fat, you must have a calorie deficit of 7,700.
Considering the average daily intake can be anywhere from 1,800-2,400kcals, it takes some time to burn that fat. People’s biggest mistake is not allowing the time for changes to take place within the body. Health and fitness is a lifestyle, not a temporary quick fix.
- Creating too big a calorie deficit to try accelerate the process will lead to injury or illness.
- Here’s some quick maths to help you understand the fat loss process: John, aged 35, burns 2,400kcals a day without adding exercise.
- His main goal is to lose weight.
- He does three reboots a week and burns on average 700kcals per session.
He chooses a healthy 500 calorie daily deficit to attain his goals. So on his non work out days, John consumes 1,900kcal and on the days he does reboot, consumes 2,500kcals (2,400 + 700 = 3,100 – 500 = 2,500). John sticks to this religiously for 6 weeks.
- How much fat has he lost? Nearly 3 kilos of fat.
- Go John! Now this isn’t counting weight he will lose from fluid retention by tiding up his diet.
- Yes, he cut back on alcohol and consumed cleaner food in this period too, in order to hit his daily goals (The types of calories you put in to your body affect body composition too, but that’s a whole other conversation).
Remember you can’t out train a bad diet! Math for those who like this stuff: 500 daily deficit x 7 days a week = 3,500 x 6 weeks =21,000/7,700kcals in 1kg of fat = 2.75kg. Now I hear some of you say ‘3 kilos? That’s not much for 6 weeks of work’ But it’s not just three kilos, it’s three kilos of pure FAT.
As mentioned above, eating cleaner food will have other effects on your body, such as decreasing bloatedness, cleaner digestive system and increase in energy. Meaning total weight loss could in fact be more. Have a look at this picture of 2kg of fat vs 2kg of muscle and tell me 3kg fat loss isn’t much.

Is losing 1 kg a week healthy?
3. Set realistic goals – It may seem obvious to set realistic weight-loss goals. But do you really know what’s realistic? Over the long term, it’s smart to aim for losing 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week. Generally to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day, through a lower calorie diet and regular physical activity.
- Depending on your weight, 5% of your current weight may be a realistic goal, at least for an initial goal.
- If you weigh 180 pounds (82 kilograms), that’s 9 pounds (4 kilograms).
- Even this level of weight loss can help lower your risk of chronic health problems, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
When you’re setting goals, think about both process and outcome goals. “Walk every day for 30 minutes” is an example of a process goal. “Lose 10 pounds” is an example of an outcome goal. It isn’t essential that you have an outcome goal, but you should set process goals because changing your habits is a key to weight loss.

How can I burn 7700 calories a day?
60 mins of running on the treadmill set at 10km an hour = 500 calories (again, this is an estimate of the average person). That means you’d need to run approximately 15.2 hours to burn 7,700 calories.
How much calories do I burn a day?
Doing the Math With a BMR Calculator to Make Weight Loss Work for You – To lose a pound, you need to have a good idea of how many calories you burn (use for energy) on an average day. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the average adult woman expends roughly 1,600 to 2,400 calories per day, and the average adult man uses 2,000 to 3,000 calories per day.
- The average adult woman is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 126 lbs, while the average man is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 154 lbs.) Yet age, activity level, body size, and body composition all influence how many calories a person burns through each day.
- To get a more accurate idea of your daily caloric requirements, you can turn to an online metabolic rate calculator.
These determine basal metabolic rate (BMR), which refers to the number of calories that the body burns every day for energy just to maintain basic biological functions. It’s based on your height, weight, age, and biological sex, according to diabetes.co.uk,
When multiplied by an activity factor (how much you move in a day), you get your daily metabolic rate, an estimate of how many calories you actually burn in 24 hours — and how many calories you need to eat every day just to keep your weight constant, says Sari Greaves, a registered dietitian nutritionist at LBS Nutrition in East Brunswick, New Jersey, and the author of Cooking Well Healthy Kids,
Some BMR calculators allow you to enter your body fat versus lean mass, a percentage that accounts for a large amount of the variations between any two people’s basal metabolic rates. But using such a calculator, while more accurate than calculators that do not take into account your body fat versus lean mass will require that you have a tool like calipers (those fat pinchers your doctor may have used on you in the past) or a smart scale to estimate your body composition.
Once you know your current daily caloric requirement, you can create your own formula for losing weight. Simply put, as long as you are eating fewer calories than that number, or you increase your daily caloric burn with exercise, you will lose weight, explains Audra Wilson, RD, CSCS, a bariatric dietitian and strength and conditioning specialist at the Northwestern Medicine Metabolic Health and Surgical Weight Loss Center at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Illinois.
For example, you might eat 500 fewer calories, work off 500 more calories through exercise, or do any combination of the two actions to achieve a deficit of 500 calories. For example, you might choose to eat 250 calories fewer than your daily caloric requirement and then do a workout that burns another 250 calories, she says.
- In terms of the 3,500-calorie rule, that would mean that if you achieve that 500-calorie deficit at the end of each day, you would lose 1 lb of fat in seven days.
- Unfortunately, that equation tends to oversimplify — and overestimate losses, so don’t expect to lose that much that fast.
- While the math is complicated, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, one of the top nutrition research centers in the United States, has created a weight loss predictor to help you more closely estimate how much weight you would lose with a given daily calorie deficit.
It uses mathematical models based on your age, height, weight, and biological sex, as well as the size of your daily caloric deficit. It also provides an estimate of how many calories you need to maintain your body weight (and likely are consuming right now).
How many kg is 3500 calories?
Tipping the scale – Your weight is a balancing act, but the equation is simple. If you eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight. And if you eat fewer calories and burn more calories through physical activity, you lose weight. In the past, research found about 3,500 calories of energy equaled about 1 pound (0.45 kilogram) of fat.
- So researchers thought burning or cutting 500 calories a day led to losing 1 pound a week.
- But this isn’t true for everyone.
- In general, if you cut about 500 calories a day from your usual diet, you may lose about ½ to 1 pound a week.
- But this can vary depending on your body, how much weight you want to lose, your gender and activity level.
It sounds simple. But it’s more difficult because when you lose weight, you usually lose a mix of fat, lean tissue and water. Also, because of changes that occur in the body as a cause of weight loss, you may need to decrease calories more to keep losing weight.

How many steps burn 100 calories?
How many calories do you burn from 10,000 steps? – Any estimation of how many calories you burn from an exercise like walking or running depends on how heavy you are. On average, heavier people use more energy to move than lighter people. Most rough estimates revolve around 100 calories burned per mile for a 180-pound person.
How many miles are 10,000 steps? On average, 10,000 steps are going to come out to be roughly 5 miles. So assuming you weigh 180 pounds, then yes, by simple mathematics, 100 calories x 5 miles equals 500 calories. Over a week, that becomes 3,500 calories. But if you are lighter or heavier, you will burn less/more calories while taking the same number of steps or walking the same distance,
If you were 120-pounds, in that same mile you would only burn 60 calories. Calculate that over a week and that only becomes 2,100 calories, meaning that you are 1,400 calories short of reaching that 3,500 calorie goal.
Is eating 1200 calories a day healthy?
– Calorie needs are highly individualized and depend on many factors, including body size, age, and activity levels. A 1,200-calorie diet is inappropriate for most adults, including smaller women. Though calorie requirements vary from person to person and accurate needs can only be determined using specific equipment or calculations, the average adult woman needs around 2,000 calories per day to maintain her weight, while a man needs around 2,500 ( 21, 22 ).
Again, these numbers are only averages and don’t reflect the differences in calorie needs due to factors like age, activity levels, and height. However, these average calorie need estimations gives you an idea of how low 1,200 calories is. A 1,200-calorie diet is much too low for most people and can result in negative side effects like dizziness, extreme hunger, nausea, micronutrient deficiencies, fatigue, headaches, and gallstones ( 23 ).
Furthermore, a 1,200-calorie diet can set you up for failure if long-term weight loss is your goal. Restricting calories leads to metabolic changes in your body. These include increases in hormones like ghrelin and cortisol, which drive hunger, as well as a drop in resting metabolic rate (RMR), or the calories that you burn while at rest ( 12, 24 ).
This leads to greater chances of weight regain over time, as well as the vicious cycle of repeated periods of weight loss followed by weight regain that so many chronic dieters experience — which commonly leads to feelings of despair. Weight cycling is detrimental to mental health, and research has shown that repeated dieting and weight cycling can stress the heart and may lead to a higher risk of eating disorders, type 2 diabetes, and increased mortality ( 25, 26 ).
summary Cutting calories too severely can lead to negative side effects like nutrient deficiencies and fatigue. Low calorie diets rarely work for long-term weight loss and can lead to weight cycling, which negatively affects overall health.
Is 1200 calories good for weight loss?
– Share on Pinterest Age, sex, activity level, and body size all affect the number of calories a person should consume. The average adult needs 1,600–3,000 calories every day to sustain their body weight, When a person consumes fewer calories than they need, the body begins to shed weight.
It does this first by burning fat, and then eventually, other tissue, including muscle. Most people need significantly more than 1,200 calories a day. Therefore, individuals who cut their daily intake to 1,200 calories can expect to lose some weight. This can be beneficial for people who are overweight or obese.
Some research suggests that a low calorie diet, such as a 1,200 calorie diet, offers additional health benefits. The National Institute of Health (NIH) note that in animal studies, lower calorie diets helped animals live longer and reduced the risk of diseases, such as cancer,
Observational studies of groups that consume fewer calories suggest they are healthier. However, this data is incomplete. Not all research on animals applies to humans. It is also possible that other factors, such as the specific foods that people eat when following a low calorie diet, may be responsible for improved health.
Some research also suggests that weight loss is about more than the calories a person consumes and burns. The body may change the rate at which it burns calories depending on how many calories a person eats. Therefore a person on a 1,200 calorie diet may burn fewer of them.
