But alcoholic drinks can be a significant contributor to your daily calorie intake.

  • A 2012 study found that the average American adult consumes 100 calories a day from beer, wine or other alcoholic beverages.
  • And close to 20 percent of men and 6 percent of women consume more than 300 calories from alcohol daily, the study found.
  • This can add up – for example, consuming 100 calories more than you burn every day may lead to a weight gain of 10 pounds over a year.

Because alcoholic drinks are essentially “empty” calories and don’t contribute toward your daily nutrition, cutting back on alcohol may be one healthy way to lose weight. Different types of alcoholic drinks pack varying amounts of calories. Tariq Engineer / Updated: Jun 6, 2019, 06:00 IST The answer is none at all, but drinking in limited quantities does reduce health risks Between 2010 and 2017, the average alcohol consumption in India rose from 4.3 to 5.9 litres per adult per year, according to a study published in the Lancet journal earlier this year, and that number is projected to keep growing.

Given that alcohol use is linked to a wide range of diseases, from liver cirrhosis to cardiovascular diseases, from depression to certain cancers to strokes, as well as contributing to deaths by other means such as drunken driving, how much alcohol is actually safe to drink is an urgent question on a personal, as well as, a public health level.

The bad news for those who enjoy a drink or two is this: A Lancet study published last year stated that consuming any amount of alcohol is bad for you. “There is no safe level of alcohol when you want to eliminate the risk,” Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, surgeon and deputy director, Centre for Cancer Epidemiology at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, told Mumbai Mirror.

That is the bottom line.” It is the uncertainty of the risk that matters, says Dr Atul Ambekar, a professor at the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre and Department of Psychiatry at AIIMS, and one of the founders of Alcohol Web India, a website created to spread awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol and to help people affected by alcohol use.

In an email to Mirror, he wrote, “Research has established that the risk of health damage increases manifold with higher levels of consumption of alcohol. However, in the Indian context, the level of alcohol consumption, above which there is high risk of health damage, is not yet determined.

  1. So it is difficult to suggest a safe level of consumption anywhere, but more so in India.” Standard measures That said, if one still wants to drink, doctors recommend sticking to no more than six to seven standard drinks per week for men.
  2. It is considered to be less harmful (but there is still a risk),” says Dr Rohan Sequeira, who is a consultant, general medicine at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre.

He explains that the standard drink size is 330 ml for beer, 30 ml for hard alcohol (whiskey, gin etc) and 150 ml for wine (red or white). Dr Sequeira says that the body can metabolise one drink per hour, and not more than three standard drinks per day.

  • There is also no difference between the effects of the standard sizes of beer, wine or hard spirits.

  • In order to mitigate the effects of alcohol, doctors say it is much better to eat first and to dilute the alcohol with a mixer (preferably water).
  • Dr Sequeira recommends eating a low-calorie snack or some vegetables before drinking to reduce the rate of the absorption of alcohol.

Also, drinking lots of water in addition to alcohol can help prevent dehydration and reduce or eliminate the next day’s hangover. For various biological and metabolic reasons, the standard drink recommendation for women is about half that for men. “While one fully supports the notion of gender equality, the medical fact remains that women are much more vulnerable to the harmful effects of alcohol,” Dr Ambekar says.

Binging is always bad Binge drinking, defined as four or more standard drinks at a time, is much worse than having one drink a day for four days. “Your body is going to see metabolic change. If you are a diabetic, your blood sugar will spike. If you have blood pressure, your blood pressure will rise. It also affects your cholesterol levels for the next three months,” says Dr Sequeira.

According to Dr Ambekar, “research shows that in India, a pattern of drinking, which includes ‘Heavy Episodic Drinking’ is quite common. Thus, many Indians may not drink daily, but even infrequent consumption is heavy (‘binge drinking’) and detrimental for the health.” Age and weight “The body’s compensatory mechanisms grow weaker when it comes to age, says Dr Chaturvedi, so the older you get, the more important it becomes to restrict or avoid drinking alcohol.

  1. When it comes to weight, it’s more complicated.
  2. A lighter, smaller person may feel the affects of alcohol quicker than a larger, heavier person.
  3. But there are so many different criterias that determine the level of tolerance to alcohol that “it is not necessary that a large individual will be able to withstand a higher amount of alcohol,” Dr Ambekar says.

If a person has a pre-existing condition such as obesity, then the risks from drinking alcohol increase as well. What about benefits? A study published in Lancet in the 1990s posited that red wine in moderation might be good for the heart and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence about that too.

There was a time about two decades ago when Utpal Khot was knocking back about half a bottle of rum four or five times a week, Unsurprisingly, his body did not react well to this. He would feel tired, irritable, and suffered from manic hangovers. Then, he was diagnosed with high blood pressure. “The blood pressure rise was because of the rum,” says the 47-year-old, who is a food and lifestyle blogger.

His doctor advised him to give up alcohol or, at the very least, to switch to wine. So Khot switched to red wine. He soon began feeling less tired and more energetic, the hangovers disappeared and his blood pressure came down drastically. As an added benefit, his skin improved and began to glow too, he says.

  • Today, he has a glass of wine — red or white — three times a week after dinner.
  • After a heavy meal, if you have a glass of wine, it will benefit you,” he recommends.
  • For 30-year-old Nitasha Arora, a food and drink allergy test taken a year ago changed her drinking habits.

But the test showed that she was allergic to precisely those kinds of alcohols (among other things). So her ENT specialist recommended she switch to red wine. “I did a lot of research on the benefits of red wine. I was trying to convince myself because this is the only I can have and I need to have something,” she says. A year on from the test, Arora finds that she not only enjoys red wine but believes that she has benefitted physically from it. Facts to consider include that she now drinks more slowly since red wine is full bodied. She also rarely has more than a glass or two.

And since red wine has fewer calories than white wine, it has helped her count calories too. On the bright side, her hair and skin, like Khot, feels much better too. But the Lancet study from last year argued that any benefits that might arise from drinking red wine, even in moderation, is outweighed by the risks.

“Whatever health benefits have been shown, may hold true only in specific cases — to people with a distinct genetic makeup, body-type, lifestyle and diet preference — and may not be applicable to all,” Dr Ambekar says. In addition, he points out that any health benefits with regard to heart disease may well be offset by a higher risk of other diseases such as liver diseases, brain diseases or cancers.

  • Thus, for ‘health reasons’ there is no justification for recommending alcohol consumption in any amount.
  • People may want to consume alcohol for whatever else they may perceive as beneficial for them, but health is certainly not a beneficial effect,” he says.
  • Recovering from damage Dr Chaturvedi is categorical that once alcohol has damaged the body, it is irreversible.

“If the liver cells are dead, if the infarction has happened; if there is a coronary issue, there is no way, People have to stop. There is no diet or exercise that can reverse the effects of alcohol.” Dr Sequeira, however, says, the body also has excellent protective mechanisms that allow it to “repair itself to a certain level”.

  • But giving up alcohol is the best thing to do, he says.

  • So the idea is to manage alcohol consumption for the general population to reduce incidences of health risks.

Dr Chaturvedi believes alcohol should be treated the same way as tobacco — “there should have a warning on every alcohol bottle like we do with cigarettes,” he says. Proper regulation of the alcohol market is something Dr Ambekar would like to see as well, coupled with creating awareness about the dangers of alcohol, as well as empowering people to prevent and manage alcohol-related diseases.
