This onion tomato based gravy for chapathi & rice is super easy to make and it is delicious and healthy as well. Tomato onion curry is also popularly known as thakkali ulli curry for chapathi in Kerala, South India and this is a simple and popular curry from Kerala which is enjoyed with chapathi, poori etc. This simple and easy tomato onion curry recipe is very flexible and you can easily adjust the flavors as you wish. You can make it very mild curry, medium or spicy as you wish. And you can use your favorite spices as well. We use garam masala powder as one of the most flavoring spices to make this onion tomato gravy or curry. tomato onion curry You may also try curry powder instead if you wish. Make sure to use ginger garlic paste (or freshly crushed garlic or grated ginger) for the best results! If you add many tomatoes, the sourness will be more, so in my recipe I am using the right amount of tomatoes so it won’t be too sour.

How do you make a delicious Curry at home?
Onion Curry | Onion Curry for Chapathi – Simple Onion Curry which has minimum masala and fresh flavours. This pairs beautiful with rice or roti. Course Main Cuisine Indian
▢ Onion – 3 large sliced ▢ Green Chillies – 4 to 5 ▢ Oil – 3 tblsp ▢ Ginger Garlic Paste – 1 tblsp ▢ Tomato – 2 chopped finely ▢ Turmeric powder – 1 tsp ▢ Salt to taste ▢ Coconut – ½ cup grated ▢ Fennel seeds / Saunf / Sombu – 1 tsp
▢ Grind coconut and fennel seeds to a smooth paste. ▢ Heat oil in a kadai. Add in onions and saute till it gets soft. ▢ Add in chillies and turmeric powder along with salt. Saute them for few mins. ▢ Add in ginger garlic paste and mix well. ▢ Add tomatoes and cook that till mushy. ▢ Add in coconut masala and mix well. Simmer for 2 mins. ▢ Serve with roti or rice.
1)Saute the onions till soft, this adds nice sweetness to your curry.2)If you don’t have tomatoes, skip tomatoes. Instead add little lemon juice in the end.3)You can add very little roasted gram dal or cashews or any nuts along with coconut when grinding.

How to make ivy gourd curry?
Instructions –
- Put the long, thin sliced pieces of tender Ivy Gourd, add Salt and Turmeric and pour water enough to immerse the pieces. Cook to one whistle on a high flame and remove.
- Add the ingredients for Coconut Spice one by one to the pan. Start with Mustard Seeds and add Raw Coconut at the end and fry. Once it is cool, grind the mixture into a powder
- Heat oil, add Mustard Seeds, Curry leaves and fry.
- Add the coarse Coconut Spice Powder, add Tamarind Juice and cook until the oil separates.
- Once the oil separates, add the cooked Ivy Gourd pieces, straining the water, and cook slowly in Tamarind Juice for 4-5 minutes.
- Add some Jaggery, mix and remove.
