Swedish Meat Balls

What makes Swedish meat balls different from any others is the nutmeg, and the nutmeg infused sauce. Now, we can make our own without having to trip off to Ikea!

1 kg ground Beef
1 cup chopped Onion
1 egg
½ cup Bread Crumbs
½ tsp ground Nutmeg
½ tsp ground Allspice
1 tsp Salt
½ tsp finely ground Black Pepper
¼ cup Butter
¼ cup Flour
3 cups Beef Stock
½ cup Sour Cream
½ tsp ground Nutmeg
½ tsp ground Allspice
1 tsp Salt
½ tsp Black Pepper

1. Preheat oven to 180C
2. Mix all the meatball ingredients together and form into walnut-sized balls.
3. Heat olive oil in a frypan over high heat. Brown all sides of the meatballs by agitating the pan over the heat for a few minutes. This way, they’ll retain their shape.
4. Put these on a baking tray lined with paper and bake for 15 mins.
5. While they are cooking, make the sauce by melting the butter in a large frying pan. Add the flour to make a roux using a whisk. Add the beef stock, whisking as you go to make a smooth sauce.
6. Cook for 6-8 minutes until it thickens a little.
7. Blend in the sour cream, nutmeg, allspice, salt and pepper.
8. Add the cooked meatballs and gently re-heat.
Serve on a bed of mashed potatoes, with fresh veggies on the side. Oh, yes!
